Iona Lane + Catch The Sparrow

Event Type

Genre : Music - Folk/blues/world

Description

Both Iona Lane and Catch The Sparrow (Suze Terwisscha) are part of a new generation of folk musicians whose songs are as tied to the world around us as much as they are to the tradition and lives of the people who share the land.

After studying music under the guidance of folk luminaries Nancy Kerr, Jim Moray and Stuart McCallum, Iona Lane released her debut album Hallival in 2022 to critical acclaim. It reached number 36 in the Folk Charts and garnered airplay across the country including the folk shows on BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio Scotland and BBC Radio Wales. Hallival is a rich and fertile record finding stories in rural locations of mythology, folklore and science and giving them new life in folk music both in terms of ideas and promise for a career ahead.

Based in Leeds Iona describes herself as a singer, songwriter and storyteller and has been praised for her delicate yet powerful vocals. Accompanied by intricate guitar playing and the hypnotic tones of a shruti box (an instrument originating from India that works on a system of bellows, similar to a harmonium; often used to provide a drone in Indian classical music.) Iona?s musical touches and contemplative melodies have captivated audiences up and down the country are sure to win over Durham hearts and minds when she plays Claypath Deli in May.

?Iona feels like a kindred spirit with her gorgeous evocations of landscape and geeky scientific references.? - Karine Polwart

?A real talent!? - Mark Radcliffe BBC Radio2

?An intriguing debut ? her sweet voice recalls EmilĂana Torrini, while her lyrics and musical arrangements crackle with wide-eyed curiosity.? ? Jude Rogers, The Guardian (2022)

?Spellbinding? - Jericho Keys, BBC Introducing

Catch The Sparrow is the project of composer, arranger and vocalist Suze Terwisscha. From an early age, Suze loved writing stories and making music. When she realised it was possible to combine both passions, a life-long infatuation with song writing began. Around the age of 16, Suze started performing regularly, accompanying herself on the piano and playing original songs. In 2015 she commenced her studies at the Utrecht Conservatoire, majoring in Jazz and Pop vocals. During her time there, she started playing with a band as a way to fully explore new sounds and rhythms. In 2021, Suze completed her Masters degree in Traditional and Folk music at Newcastle University, where she studied with Emily Portman and Imogen Gunner. Influenced by the likes of Joni Mitchell, Lisa Knapp, Joanna Newsom and Fiona Apple, her compositions effortlessly cross boundaries of style and genre in an exciting blend of folk, jazz and pop. Her EP 'Winter Flowers' was released in December 2022.

?I love the delight in discovering, by chance or fate, beautiful sounds that resonate deeply. One such recent discovery for me has been Dutch singer-songwriter Catch The Sparrow?s delicately delivered, richly narrated songs.? ? NARC
