The Oxted Sessions is delighted to present 'Americana In The Fall', a one-day celebration of Americana Music on Sunday 1st October at Hurst Green Community Centre.
We have five brilliant acts lined up, from both sides of the Atlantic, for the perfect afternoon and evening for fans of Americana music - and all it encompasses: folk, country, roots...
Our lineup is: Dietrich Strause; Hatful of Rain; Jesse Terry; Rod Picott; and Zervas & Pepper.
Dietrich Strause:
Dietrich Strause is a Boston-based songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. His fifth studio album, YOU AND I MUST BE OUT OF MY MIND, will come out April 29 on Jeffrey Foucault's Blueblade Records - and indeed, Dietrich was seen in Oxted last November opening for Jeffrey, where he was brilliantly received by a sold-out crowd.
The American singer-songwriter has spent over a decade weaving timeless melodies with heartbreaking narratives using his ?virtuosic command of imagery? and ?his knack for vivid, almost literary lyricism? (WBUR, Boston NPR) - and he is now setting up shop in London. His songs have been described by Americana UK as ?captivating and evocative? with his latest collection no exception. Each one is an exploration and discovery of loss, hope, desire, and disillusionment through images of love-worn soldiers, scrambled weathervanes, listless sailors, and drifting satellites lost in an open heart.
Hatful of Rain
Hatful of Rain are a 4 piece from South East England playing Americana tinged acoustic music, centred round the song writing of Chloƫ Overton. Formed in 2010 they have enjoyed success with radio play by BBC2s Bob Harris and Mark Radcliffe, releasing 3 albums and an EP of traditional tracks - playing live to audiences up and down the UK. The video for their debut single ?Way up on the hill? has reached 23K views on YouTube.
Hatful of Rain are best seen live - they play a variety of instruments, each taking turns on guitar, banjo, mandolin and double bass....using a ?single mic? approach to capture that intimate feel. Their songs speak of the complexities of everyday life and the music is playfully referred to as a style called ?melanjolly?. Praise for their music centres on Chloƫ?s lead vocal presence combined with seamless harmonies.
Jesse Terry
"It is easy to compare Terry?s heritage and storytelling to that of Jackson Browne, James Taylor or Bruce Springsteen. A symphonic delight for the heart and soul." (Americana UK)
"Brings to mind iconic artists/poets like Paul Simon and Jackson Browne... [with] a performance that touches a heart like only a whisper can" (Music News Nashville)
Whatever magic potion the troubadours in Laurel Canyon were sipping on in 1971, Jesse Terry has managed to track it down and take a deep gulp. Now on his seventh album, 'When We Wander', Terry performs his beautifully crafted songs to around 150 audiences a year from Bonnaroo to the Philadelphia Folk Festival, the 30A Song-writers Festival to Americana Fest.
Emerging from a degree at Berklee College of Music, Jesse netted a five-year staff writer gig on Nashville's Music Row penning material for major TV networks, and winning prestigious songwriting awards including 'The John Lennon Songwriting Contest' and 'The CMT/NSAI Song Contest.' His music has appeared in Netflix?s ?Virgin River,? CW?s ?Hart of Dixie,? PBS?s ?Roadtrip Nation? and ABC?s ?Fever.' He has a book out in Spring 2023 via Schiffer Publishing, 'If I Were the Moon' based on his song of the same name.
Rod Picott
?Mesmerizing? ? Rolling Stone.com
?A truly great songwriter? ? 3rd Coast Music
?Great writing is all about story, and Rod is so damn good at story? ? Mary Gauthier
Over twenty-three years, thirteen albums, three published books and thousands of shows Rod Picott has worked; powered by the fuel of the blue-collar world he was born into. Through white knuckled determination Picott has been fortunate to open for Alison Krauss and Union Station, play the Shrewsbury Folk festival, appear several times on the BBC2 Bob Harris sessions, play the Maverick Festival and receive the ?Song of the Year? award for his co-write (w/Slaid Cleaves) ?Broke Down? at the Austin Music Awards.
Picott?s latest album, tentatively titled A Puncher?s Chance, was produced by musician and filmmaker Neilson Hubbard (John Prine, Lucinda Williams) A Puncher?s Chance features some of Picott?s sharpest writing to date. There is darkness roiling through the collection, but also hope and grace. Picott is a writer who mines the invisible, working-class men and women of the world he comes from and does this with the grace and dignity only someone who knows the splinters of that life firsthand can conjure.
Zervas & Pepper.
?Harmonies glazed in honey, Little psychedelic clouds and open tunes guitars-the Laurel Canyon Sound surprisingly resides in Cardiff? (Rolling Stone)
?Some of this years best Americana" (The Guardian)
Zervas and Pepper began their partnership in Cardiff, with singer/songwriters Paul Zervas and Kathryn Pepper guesting on each others solo sets at folk clubs across the City. Both artists totally immersed in the harmony laden sounds coming out of California in the 60's.
Now, four albums later and the pair have collected a fine set of musicians to bring to life their shared vision, and together the band have toured the UK and Germany for support slots and headline shows. Zervas & Pepper's sounds have made their way across the National airwaves of both UK and Europe. Appearing as guests on flagship National Radio BBC shows such as BBC6music's Lauren laverne show, BBC Radio 2's Terry Wogan Show, Radcliffe and Maconie, Janice Long Show and many more. ZP have supported Scottish pop legends Deacon Blue for a full UK arena tour and have toured with much acclaimed folk artist Seth Lakeman.
