[Day 08: 22/07/2023]

Brick Lane (Sarah Gravon, 2007):

This very urban tale of arranged marriage and immigration takes place in a very vibrant, diverse and tense London in the aftermath of the September 11th attacks across the pond. It tells the story of Nazneem (Tannishtha Chatterjee), born and raised in an impoverished rural area of Bangladesh. Her mother's compassion drowns her younger sister because she does not want the girl to endure a life of hardship and suffering. Her father marries her to a much older and relatively well-heeled man in London, Chanu (Satish Kaushik). They live on the titular London road, the heart of the British Bengali community. She settles and has two daughters with Chanu, but life in the UK still has some unexpected surprises in store for her.

Sarah Gavron?s feature debut is based on the eponymous book by British novelist Monica Ali. This slow-moving and tender drama has received widespread acclaim for its touching humanity and bursting realism.
