Faire is the heaven
Where happy souls have place
In full enjoyment of felicitie
Edmund Spenser?s words are a sublime reflection of the focus on the promise to the faithful of a heavenly reward at the end of earthly life. And so it is for much of the music written for the liturgy.
In this concert of mainly European sacred music, three pieces of the English Church form pillars around which the rest of the choral pieces are intertwined. They point heavenward in William Harris?s setting of the concert?s title piece, in Stanford?s Coelos ascendit and Stainer?s gripping setting of I saw the Lord.
We will sing works by Palestrina, Victoria, Buxtehude and Bach; and there is, too, a touch of Bruckner and Stravinsky.
