As a solo guitarist, Sir Richard Bishop fuses the sounds of flamenco, North African rai and Turkish psych with the spirits of Django Reinhardt and Derek Bailey, early Middle Eastern pop and Central Asian ragas.
For over a quarter of a century, Bishop was part of the legendary, perplexing and mysterious experimental trio Sun City Girls. Extraordinarily prolific and possessed a world-gobbling vision, SCG took absurdist jazz-punk, ethno-improv and fuck-you audience confrontation to sublime and unimaginable heights until the death of drummer Charles Gocher in 2007. Bishop went on to form the psych-power trio Rangda with Ben Chasney (Six Organs Of Admittance) and Chris Corsano. Other influences are absorbed from his extended periods of travelling the world, collecting music for brother (and former SCG bandmate) Alan?s extra-geographic label Sublime Frequencies.
Returning now after a near-decade spent as a rare book dealer specialising in the occult and esoterica, Bishop envelops his lucid, tumbling guitar playing with magick, Tantra, and arcane weirdness. Expect a mixture of gypsy rag, Eastern drones, free improvisation, white noise plus everything and nothing in between.
