JS Bach - Concerto for two violins in D minor. Soloists: Trish Calnan and Catherine Hayek.
CPE Bach - Concerto for cello in A major. Soloist: Felix Rosenboom.
Schubert (arr. Mahler) - 'Death and the Maiden' String Quartet in D minor.
Join the Lyric for a thrilling concert of string music. An unusual opportunity to hear three hugely talented musicians accompanied by the Lyric, presenting the timeless, beautiful music of father JS Bach and son CPE Bach. JS Bach explores the key of D minor in a graceful duet between two violins featuring inventive and poignant music, paving the way for his son to showcase the cello in three movements of vigour, joy, and soulful beauty in which the cello's virtuosity is untamed. The major work of the evening follows: Schubert's epic String Quartet, 'Death and the Maiden'. Beginning and ending in the minor key this music sustains an emotional intensity from beginning to end. Its gestures are powerful, often abrupt, and exciting. Using variations on a theme crafted from elements of his 1817 song ?Der Tod und das Mädchen? , Schubert?s sombre theme and five beautifully-coloured variations culminate in a radiantly peaceful sixth variation and conclusion.
