Description

A new season awaits! Join LGSO for the opening concert of our 2023-24 season on Sunday 15 October.

We kick things off with Boulanger?s 'D?un Soir Triste'. Written shortly before Boulanger?s early death the title translates to ?Of a Sad Evening? and is considered a remarkable piece for such a young composer (she was just 24 at the time of writing). This gorgeous work is full of dark colours in the harmony and cross rhythms across the orchestra with lush strings throughout.

'The Golden Cockerel' is a three act opera from Rimsky-Korsakov. We are performing a suite of music from this much-loved and popular opera. Based on Pushkin?s The Tale of the Golden Cockerel, the story follows the bumbling Tsar Dodon who talks himself into believing that his country is in danger from a neighbouring state. He requests advice from the Astrologer who supplies a magical Golden Cockerel. A battle, family deaths, a love story between the Tsar and his adversary, double crossing and betrayal all follow.

Tchaikovsky?s 'Symphony No.4' is a favourite of orchestras and audiences worldwide. This dramatic and moving piece was originally, and bizarrely considering the symphony?s popularity today, disregarded by critics! However from the opening brass fanfare leading to more rousing brass and woodwind throughout, romantic and luscious strings passages and driving percussion, the piece has become popular over time. The contrast between the movements ensures that all listeners will find something to love about ?Tchaik 4.
