Christmas is coming and LGSO have the presents lined up under the tree already.
Coleridge-Taylor?s 'Christmas Overture' will get even the biggest of Grinches excited for the festive season. Featuring a selection of Christmas favourites, such as God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen, Good King Wenceslas and Hark! the Herald Angels Sing, the piece is actually thought to be a selection of incidental music that Coleridge-Taylor wrote for a play called The Forest of Wild Thyme. A gorgeous start to any festive celebrations!
'Carol Symphony' from composer Hely-Hutchinson is a collection of four preludes based on five Christmas carols. They?ve been re-worked to feature additional orchestras and counterpoints. Hely-Hutchinson expresses the spirit of joy, called up by memories of the romance and mystery of the Christmas story. The carols worked into this piece and to listen out for include O Come, All Ye Faithful and The First Noël.
Mussorgsky?s 'Pictures at an Exhibition' is surely the ultimate gift for the season! Depicting a tour of an art exhibition, each movement represents a different pieces of art. Originally a show piece for virtuosic pianists, the orchestral arrangement we know today was completed by Ravel of Bolero fame. This huge, 10-movement piece, is one of the most performed and recorded pieces of music in the world, and has even been sampled and featured in rock, jazz and folk music.
