Holst, Mozart and Beethoven feature as we welcome in Spring.
The 'St Paul?s Suite', by Holst, is a popular work for string orchestra. It takes it?s name from St Paul?s Girls? School in Hammersmith, where Holst was the school?s music master. Starting with a sprightly jig, the suite also features the folk songs Dargason and Greensleeves.
Mozart?s 'Concerto for Flute and Harp' is one of only two double concertos Mozart created. One of his most popular concertos, and is regularly featured on recordings for both instruments. Mozart wrote the piece whilst living in Paris after it was commission by a duke for his own use with his daughter. Mozart came to despise the duke, who never paid the composer for this work.
Beethoven?s Eroica - 'Symphony No.3' - is one of the most celebrated symphonies. Marking the beginning of Beethoven?s innovative ?middle period?, the work broke boundaries in symphonic form, length, harmony and emotional and cultural content. It is often considered to be the first Romantic symphony and is a milestone in classical music and a key step from the Classical era to the Romantic era of music. It was originally dedicated to Napoleon Bonaparte, whom Beethoven believed embodied the democratic ideals of the French Revolution. The dedication was dramatically removed, when Napoleon proclaimed himself Emperor of the French.
