Description
This programme celebrates traditional songs from across the Atlantic, beginning with folk songs from England, Ireland and Scotland, then hopping 'across the pond' to American traditions. Copland's Appalachian Spring depicts the 'traditional' American way of living through folk-inspired melodies, and ending with a setting of the Shaker tune Simple Gifts. A selection of numbers from Copland's Old American Songs shows a wide range of traditional music from America. The concert ends with Rutter's Feel the Spirit - an incredible arrangement of African American Spirituals, sensitively set for choir and orchestra.
