Description

To celebrate 100 years since Bert Trautmann?s birth, St Helens Town AFC and Lucem House Community Cinema present a special one-off screening of 2018 biopic ?The Keeper?. The film tells the amazing true-life story of how a German PoW finds a new life in St Helens after local businessman and St Helens Town chairman Jack Friar offers Bert a chance to play in goal at Hoghton Road. Bert wins over the hearts of the Sutton community as well as finding love with Jack?s daughter Margaret. His skills between the posts also attracted attention from Manchester City FC. Bert would go on to famously win the 1956 FA Cup with City, whilst unknowingly playing on with a broken neck. Though Bert?s career and fame would take his life elsewhere he always kept a fondness for our town. Speaking to the St Helens Star back in 2009 he explained: ?I will always have such fond memories of St Helens in my heart. If I had to write a CV, my time there would be at the top of the list.?

The Granny (12 min)
The evening will also feature the short film ?Granny?. The short celebrates the life of St Helens footballer Lizzy Ashcroft who played for the Dick Kerr Ladies football team during WW1 and for 14 years. The team carried on playing despite the FA?s ban on the women?s game from 1921 to 1971.
