Description

For our last meeting of 2023 it?s our privilege to bring to you our friend Taffy Thomas, MBE, the first Storyteller Laureate and a legend in his own lifetime.
One of the country?s most celebrated storytellers brings traditional tales that have their roots in the long cold dark nights of midwinter. Taffy has been described as the walking library of English Folk Tales, with a unique and vast repertoire of stories from round the country, some of which are depicted on his specially commissioned Talecoat, a work of art in its own right. He?s collected stories and told them everywhere from major festivals, folk clubs schools, and on one memorable occasion to a group of Hell?s Angels who surrounded him demanding a tale. While he wore his Tale Coat to visit the late Queen for his MBE, we don?t think he actually got to tell her a story, but wouldn?t have been surprised if he had!
You will hear magical accounts of the Legend of Tinsel, the Christmas Cat and the New Year?s Bell, with a number of wintery riddles to unpick, interspersed with traditional songs, wassails and tunes from Richard & Liz York.
These are stories such as may be told in a gathering of storytellers round an open fire on a dark winter?s night, accompanied by steaming mugs of mulled wine.
While on this occasion we can?t provide the open fire and mulled wine, you can expect hot spicy apple juice, the great Feast of Fools warm atmosphere, excellent home-baked cakes, and one of the best known and loved of all storytellers in the land.
