The Ravensbourne Revival -new Alternative Folk And Urban Poetry-guests: Pearl Fish And Heka Event Title Pic

Description

Gabriel Moreno and Damien Renouf present a night of the finest Alternative Folk/Roots/Troubadour music in South East London.

Our second night includes performances by two of the finest singer-songwriters in the scene, PEARL FISH and HEKA and will feature performances by Gabriel Moreno, Damien Renouf and guests of the thriving Alternative Folk/Troubadour scene. There will also be readings by local urban poets.

Gabriel Moreno

Gabriel Moreno is Gibraltarian singer-songwriter, currently based in London. He has thrilled audiences across South America, the USA and Europe, including recent sets at UK festivals Wilderness, The Great British Folk Festival and Purbeck Valley Folk Festival, and has been championed by the likes of BBC 6 Music?s Cerys Matthews, with his sonorous baritone and poetical lyrics often seeing him compared to such luminary wordsmiths as Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave and Bill Callahan.
Moreno?s unique artistic voice lies in the meeting and fusion of different identities. Born and raised in Gibraltar, a British territory bordering southern Spain and just 8 miles from Africa, he has since lived and performed across the world, absorbing influences from music, literature and art everywhere he went. Now considered one of the most compelling and distinctive artists in London's thriving folk and roots scene, he was previously the longtime curator and host of the legendary Lantern Society folk club, and in 2022 was awarded the title of Cultural Ambassador of Gibraltar.
"An offshoot of Leonard Cohen and Neil Diamond - I love it!" - Cerys Matthews, BBC 6 Music

Damien Renouf

Damien Renouf is a South London singer-songwriter who creates songs of longing and introspection. An irresistibly engaging performer, he combines musical talent with a rare lyrical calibre which makes his songs both delightful to the ears and nutritious to the mind. Performing on steel string guitar and with a unique sumptuous voice, he creates a live experience that has been described as ?South East London Alternative Folk Revival? - at once both energetic and intimate, anarchic and absorbing.

Pearl Fish

Songstress hailing from London?s waterways. Poetic presence and spirit fuelled music. A space for hope and melancholy.
Pearl?s varied influences, range from Joni Mitchell to Laura Marling and Ben Howard; folk, indie and jazz and her enchanting voice harks back to the sound of Diana Krall.
She has been building a following on her YouTube channel , which showcases her pure, warm, expressive voice; some performed with the loop pedal and her own harmonies. They show the versatility and originality of her own folky interpretations of songs from a wide range of genres, which she has ?Pearlesced?
Her home shot videos retain her youthful innocence and allude to make-believe and adventure. The funny little out-takes reveal her shyly awkward, playful side. Her own song writing displays subtle poetic lyricism, with a strong leaning towards a folk narrative tradition, which is showcased on her first music video, ?Tide? and Travelling Man on her Soundcloud.
In 2012 she played at the Brimmington Community Festival, participated in XLP Southwark Talent Showcase, won Hope Festival Youth Talent Show, and played at the Half Moon Herne Hill London as a support act. She was chosen to take part in the London Mayors Gigs Big Busk Competition summer 2012, including busking in the Paralympic Park.
In 2013 she took part again in the Mayor of London?s Big Busk ? this is one of her original songs. She played on the Youth stages of a variety of festivals in London and beyond, including Lewisham People?s Day, Callyfest, the King Cross Carnival opening and Greenbelt. She has been selected to busk at the O2 for the BRIT Awards 2014.

heka

heka is the project of multidisciplinary artist and singer-songwriter Francesca Brierley, who grew up in the Italian hills but currently lives in London. That dual sense of identity, subconsciously or not, has informed her creative process over the past few years that she?s been releasing music: her SoundCloud bio sums up her sound as ?butchered folk,? while on Bandcamp, she swears by the motto ?lofi till I die.? Whether leaning more into the experimental folk stylings inspired by 22, A Million-era Bon Iver and Jesca Hoop or the hushed, raw intimacy of a bedroom recording, heka?s intuitive approach to songwriting and production has a way of blurring the boundaries between them.

Her new EP, (a), out now via Balloon Machine Records, is her strongest outing yet. What connects its four songs is a porous sense of space and time: textures seep in and out of its three-dimensional sound like a warm summer breeze or a precious memory, fragments Brierly often evokes through the use of field recordings and visual storytelling. Her lyrics range from abstract (?i shed all emotion and you tell me you?re free?) to grotesquely visceral (?i take a dab of you and lick my finger?), and their intensity is heightened by heka?s voice, which carries more tension and subtlety than is usually found in the lofi genre. The result is one of intoxicating beauty, a short but mesmerizing project that?s tied to the promise of bigger things to come.
