Henry III ruled England from 1216 to 1272. In his second volume of the life of Henry, David Carpenter covers the years 1258 to 1272 and the sub-title says it all: reform, rebellion, civil war, settlement. Revolutionary barons, led by Simon de Montfort, seize power and the king attempts to regain it. 1265 saw the first Parliament with a "house of commons". Our current political framework thus first saw the light of day.
David Carpenter is Professor of Medieval History at King's College, London. He came to StonyWords in 2016 to talk about Magna Carta.
