Description

CRAWDADDY CLUB RICHMOND welcomes the DAVE KELLY BAND ? MARCH 22ND 2024
Dave Kelly is the founder member of The Blues Band with Paul Jones, Hughie Flint & Tom McGuinness forty three years ago. When The Blues Band started back in 1979 Dave was
already a seasoned blues artist with a reputation across the world. In the early sixties he started performing acoustic, mostly Mississippi style blues, in folk clubs.
His first performance was a floor spot at The Half Moon Putney in 1964 - a session run by Gerry Lockran, Cliff Aungier & Royd Rivers. In 1966 he went to the USA and played at Gerde's
Folk City in New York where he was invited to join three bands ? but declined - wonder who they were! On returning from the States he joined The John Dummer Blues Band as lead vocalist and guitarist. It was with The Dummer Band that he made two UK tours backing John Lee Hooker and one with Howlin Wolf also played with Freddie King. After leaving the JDBB late in '69 he went back to solo performing and toured and recorded with
the legendary Eddie 'Son' House.

Since then he has also worked with, Buddy Guy and Junior Wells also The Allman Brothers
Band as guest, as well as continuing to tour with The Blues Band He won the British Blues Awards acoustic artist of the year for five consecutive years and so is kicked up to the House of Lords and not entered any more. The Blues Band have now made their farewell tour.

More recently he has toured in acoustic duos/trios with Paul Jones, Maggie Bell, Bob Hall, Ben Waters, as well as regular tours with Christine Collister and The Travelling Gentlemen, and several with Long John Baldry back in the 90?s.

In late 2012 Dave released, on Hypertension Records, an album entitled: Dave Kelly - Family and Friends. Featuring tracks with various family and friends recorded over the past 45 years. Guest include: Jo-Anne Kelly, Eric Bibb, Long John Baldry, Maggie Bell, Chris Barber, Jona Lewie, Christine Collister, Chuck Leavell, Paul Jones, Howlin Wolf.
July 2013 he played solo at The Vancouver Island Music festival, for the first time. Whilst there was invited to play onstage with Albert Lee & James Burton, as they left the stage James Burton put his arm around Dave and said "Dave - man - I love your voice". Coming from Elvis' guitarist and musical director, Dave took this as an enormous complement. He has played the Vancouver island Festival three times since then.

The Dave Kelly Band of course play the blues, but not exclusively, it is also a vehicle for Dave to persue his other much loved musical formats. When he and Jo-Anne were kids ( Dave 10 and Jo13) they were a harmony duo being big fans of the Everly Brothers. At the summer holiday camp talent shows they usually won with a mixture of skiffle, country and rock n roll. The DKB also follow this eclectic formula ? blues, soul, country and many of Dave?s own compositions which by definition do not fit into The Blues Band?s repertoire.

The Dave Kelly band has existed sporadically since 1982 with various settled line-ups including Mick Rogers, John ?Irish?Earle, Lou Stonebridge Steve Donnelly, Tex Comer, Ed Deane, Pick Withers, Marcus Cliffe, Pete Emery, Peter Filleul to name a few.

The current band is a five piece:
Pete Emery: lead guitar ? husband of Dave?s late sister Jo-Anne. Pete was in the Bristol group The Deep in the sixties, then a later John Dummer Band, before becoming Jo-Anne?s guitarist and husband.

Lou Stonebridge keyboards and vocals; Lou came to London from Bury, Manchester in
the late sixties with the band Glass Menagerie .His paths crossed with Tom McGuinness and he joined McGuinness Flint for the last few years of that group. He and McGuinness went
into record production, and he produced the first two albums by The Blues Band ?Official Bootleg? and ?Ready?.When The Blues Band broke up for a couple of years in 1983 The Dave Kelly Band was formed and Lou was the obvious choice for keyboards.

Sam Kelly drums and vocals. Sam played with The Blues Band, initially 31 years ago when he was 17 after Rob Townsend broke his wrist at soundcheck at Wimbledon Theatre.
He has since depped for Rob on several occasions, not least for the past few years since December 2018 as Rob Townsend has been unwell. Sam has also played with Tom Robinson Band, Steve Simpson, and toured with Dave & Christine Collister replacing Pick Withers in The Traveling Gentlemen. For many years he played with the Folk-rock band Circulus. His
various bands have taken him to festivals in Austin Texas, Australia & China.

Homer Kelly-Tarrant bass guitar and vocals: Dave?s youngest son, Homer has been in the band since 2011 when he graduated from the Brit School for performing arts and then on to the Brighton Institute for Modern Music to do his degree. He is and accomplished songwriter, guitarist and bass player. He also toured with Christine Collister and Dave on harmony vocals and bass.

In December 2015 Hypertension Records of Hamburg have released a double cd, containing 37, previously un-released tracks of solo live performances recorded on various German tours in the late 1980?s, this also contains Dave?s own notes and photos from the tours. 2021 saw Repertoire Records release a triple cd Retrospective set entitled ?40 Year On?. CD One : All My Own Work ? a selection of Dave?s own compositions, CD Two : Between The Covers ? some of Dave?s favourite songs he has covered in his own style over the years, CD Three : Alive and Kicking ? various previously unreleased live tracks from various venues around Europe including the Montreux Jazz Festival. There are 55 tracks, many unreleased.
2022 saw BGO records re-release and re-master Dave?s first two solo albums on Mercury Records from 1968 and 1970 respectively.
