This event considers the history and legacy of communal 'British Restaurants' in World War 2 and their relevance to contemporary social eating initiatives.
Caroline Beecham will talk about her novel Maggie's Kitchen (Penguin), which tells the story of a young woman setting up a communal restaurant in London's Blitz.
Professor Bryce Evans (Liverpool Hope University) will discuss his recent book, Feeding the People in Wartime Britain (Bloomsbury).
They will be in conversation with Professor Deborah Sugg Ryan (University of Portsmouth). The event is part of the Heritage Lottery Funded Project on Victoria Park, the People's Park, and is also supported by the University of Portsmouth's Heritage Hub.
Book groups are invited to read the books in advance of the event. Please note that this is a hybrid event that you can attend either in person or online.
