Two afternoon concerts, a tea-time bar session, an evening concert, and an end of day singaround and tunes session making up over 9 hours of great music.
Sam Kelly and Jamie Francis headline the evening concert (7.30pm). Sam is a BBC Radio 2 Folk Award winning singer, song-writer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist. He has recorded and produced over 10 acclaimed records, had multiple live sessions and airplay on BBC Radio 2 and 3, and his music regularly featured on Sky Arts and Sky Sports.
As a child, Sam spent many a night enraptured, listening to his Irish grandfather tell folk tales, sing songs, and play tunes on his melodeon. This awe and passion for Celtic music, coupled with a love for the heavy riffs of classic rock and blues, and a voice described by Mike Harding as ?one of my favourite voices ever? has led Sam on to produce some of the most exciting music on the British folk scene in recent years. His musical journey has ranged from reaching the final of ITV's Britain's Got Talent as a teenager, to becoming one of the most prevalent folk singers of his generation.
Jamie Francis is a banjo player, guitarist and songwriter. He started gigging at the age of 12, and grew up surrounded by both the blues music popular in his home town of Maryport, and the Irish folk music played by his father.
Jamie attended the Brighton Institute of Modern Music where he received a 1st Class BA Hons in Music Performance, and met his long time musical collaborator Sam Kelly. As well as the international gigging with Sam Kelly and the Lost Boys, Jamie has played live sessions on BBC Radio 2 and 3, played in Seth Lakeman?s band and supported numerous folk legends such as Cara Dillon and Sean Lakeman & Kathryn Roberts.
From the duo show, expect to hear haunting harmonies, soaring tunes and melodies, charming anecdotes and instrumental performances of the highest calibre, all led by Sam?s unmistakable vocals. This is not a show to be missed.
Bella Gaffney headlines the early afternoon concert (1.45pm). 2016 Celtic Connections Danny Kyle Award winner Bella writes folk inspired songs which she performs along with her own original arrangements of traditional pieces.
Bella's music is characterised by her distinctive voice, intricate guitar playing, and her knack for storytelling. She draws inspiration from a wide range of sources, including her own life experiences, the natural world, and the rich history of folk music.
-'Great singer, great guitarist, really interesting songwriter' Mike Harding
Bella is also part of sought after folk band The Magpies, who have won over audiences across the UK with their lively performances and infectious energy.
-'effervescent' The Sunday Times
Local artists Sheila Mosley and Higgs Bo'sun will provide support to Bella in the early afternoon concert.
Steve Benford's Carolan Guitar Story forms the late afternoon concert and presentation (4.30pm). Steve is a guitarist, singer and tenor banjo player from Nottingham, and also a Professor of Computer Science at Nottingham University whose research explores creative connections between folk music and computing. He will be presenting and performing with the Carolan guitar, a unique musical instrument that uses digital technologies to capture and tell its life story, from how it was made, to its travels across the world, to the many musicians it has encountered and songs it has played. As part of their latest foray into computing, Steve and Carolan will perform some AI generated folk tunes!
