Tragedy and Heroics - Tchaikovsky Overture: Francesca Da Rimini, Debussy Danse Sacre et Danse Profane, and Strauss Ein Heldenleben.
The mediaeval tale of Francesca da Rimini, in love with her husband?s brother, and both caught and murdered, was recorded by Dante in the Divine Comedy. It has inspired music and literature from subsequent generations including at least twenty now forgotten operas in the 19th century. Tchaikovsky?s vibrant symphonic poem has remained popular with good reason although Tchaikovsky suffered his usual crisis of confidence over the music.
Richard Strauss appears never to have experienced any lack of confidence and the hero of Ein Heldenleben is clearly himself, despite his unconvincing denials. The music bristles with swagger and bravado.
