PHREAKING GENDER follows the process of self-actualization through DIY transition. It acts as a techno-anarchist manifesto that explores the idea of self-augmentation; not just as a necessity for wellbeing, but as an act of empowerment and rebellion in itself.

Medical paternalism persists in Gender Identity Clinics, gatekeeping and prolonging transition treatment, denying our fundamental rights to bodily autonomy. The combination of austerity that cuts national healthcare services, alongside the ever-present vilification of trans people within modern discourse has only worsened the situation, making trans DIY a moral necessity.

The show, including the titular film, came about from Nicole O?Reilly and Luke ?Luca? Cockayne?s personal experiences with DIY hormones, Both of them use their art to ease dysphoria and imagine a better future.

The film 'Phreaking Gender' rejects the conventional 'talking heads' documentary style, opting for a visual blend of video collage and CRT circuit bent visuals alongside depictions of hormone-taking and gender-affirmation. Participants in the film express themselves through spoken word. It challenges the scrutiny of trans bodies in cis-heteronormative society, using sensual, erotic imagery to criticize cultural hegemony both with humour and sincerity..
