The Belinfante Quartet's present their latest CD "Parallel 40" - live!
Following their acclaimed performance at Buxton Fringe Festival in July 2023 this exceptional string quartet brings their "Parallel 40" project in completion.
"Parallel 40" is a celebration of diverse music and culture from countries along the 40th parallel, (the 40 degree line of latitude north of the equator).
Origins of the project: The quartet's cellist Pau comes from the Island of Menorca. At an early age he realized that the small Spanish island was separated from the rest of the world by water, resulting in a lack of connection with that world. In school, he learnt Menorca sits on the 40th Parallel North Line of Latitude, which connects Menorca with numerous places around the world and so, twenty years later, "Parallel 40 was born". The project connects music, stories and cultures from regions along this line with music of Menorca composed by Pau, travelling East through parts of Europe, on to China, Japan, the USA and back to Menorca.
The performance includes traditional music arranged by the quartet, improvisations and work by composers including Terry Riley, Tann Dunn, Antonio Scarlatti, Nikos Skalkottas and Joe Hisaishi. There is something for everyone to love, and melodies from countries on the Parallel 40th Line which you may know, and some you may not.
