Born in 1930 in Calcutta, composer and violinist John Mayer studied in Bombay before coming to England in 1952 to take up a scholarship at the Royal Academy of Music.
We are reallyy excited to celebrate his contribution with this International Jazz Day concert recreating his most iconic ensemble: the famous Indo-Jazz Fusions group, formed with Jamaican saxophonist Joe Harriott.
It was one of the most highly regarded bands of the 1960s fusion movement and Mayer reformed it later in life with his son, sitarist Jonathan Mayer, who we welcome tonight.
Also featuring RAM Head of Jazz Nick Smart on trumpet, Tabla player Mitel Purohit and fab nonet of RAM students and alumni!
