Phil Dawson is a UK guitarist who learned his trade working with legends like South African jazz trumpet giant Hugh Masekela, Nigerian Afrobeat co-creator Tony Allen, Ethio-jazz pioneer Mulatu Astatke, Ghanaian afro-rock dons Osibisa, and London cultural fusion specialists Lokkhi Terra, Soothsayers and Dele Sosimi.
Described by Jazzwise as ?freewheeling, dazzling... mind-expanding?, Phil?s band arose from a beautifully diverse UK scene; the quartet version includes great Brazilian drummer Marius Rodrigues, percussionist Maurizio Ravalico and Matheus Nova on bass. They will also be joined on this gig by a special guest!
Expect a rich set of percussion-heavy, Afrocentric grooves, hints of Coltrane, Hermeto, Tony Williams and the Afro-Brazilian tradition, with grooving originals and spontaneous interludes.
The band will be releasing their second album soon. Current LP It?s Time, described by Strut Records? Quinton Scott as ?a contemporary classic? and by Jazz FM?s Chris Phillips as
?amazing? is available on the Funkiwala/ Kudos label.
