As lockdown slowly started to lift and music groups started getting back together, some long-running projects found that they had reached a satisfying point at which to put things on ice. One of those was Leeds 6 prog-noise-core favourites, Bilge Pump. Drummer Neil Turpin and guitarist Joe O?Sullivan were still, however, itching to keep their decades-long musical understanding alive, so teamed up with long-term pal Claire Adams (from the equally excellent LS6 crews Nape Neck and Beards) to create a fresh, new power trio - Objections. Somehow matching subjects such as the weirdness of relationships or the letdowns of 21st century Britain to music that is celebratory and exhilarating, the new group seriously rock in a way that keeps you on your toes at times. All muscle, no fat, they?re bringing forth tunes rooted in springily melodic basslines, embellished by wild seesawing guitar, and propelled by effortlessly complex drums, all parts giving themselves up to the greater whole. Debut album, ?Optimistic Sizing?, is an instant classic of post-punk, taking that concept to heart in ways that precursors such as Gang Of Four, Minutemen, The Au Pairs, and Fugazi did so brilliantly, doing their own thing to create a whole new adventure.
