Chekhov's classic tragicomedy, Uncle Vanya, is an astonishingly modern play, with its meditations on money, class, work, the environment, and masculinity.
It concerns the visit of a retired professor and his younger glamorous second wife, Yelena, to the rural estate that supports their town lifestyle. Vanya, the brother of the professor's late first wife, and Astrov, the local doctor, both fall in love with Yelena, watched by Sonya, the professor's daughter by his first wife, who is herself desperately in love with Astrov. Matters are brought to a crisis when the professor makes a devastating announcement that will change all their lives and sparks a reaction that no-one had anticipated. This production features gunshots.
