Ignored by the industry and deprived of the global success afforded to the male-dominated bands of the day, Since Yesterday: The Untold Story of Scotland?s Girl Bands is a celebration of the women and the music of yesteryear, and a rallying cry to the female talent of tomorrow.
Blending personal anecdotes with a scrapbook-style audio-visual aesthetic, Since Yesterday takes us on a decade-by-decade adventure, crafting the ultimate visual mixtape. Discover unheard demos, lost archives, and rare performances that celebrate the Game Changers, Trailblazers, Popstars, Post Punks and Pioneers who never compromised, and subsequently got lost in time.
The film takes a critical look at the barriers women have faced making music in the past, and still face today. It asks how we can inspire young women to make music, if those who do so are continuously erased from our cultural history. Written & narrated by award-nominated musician Carla J. Easton, this is a powerful global story told through a local lens.
Carla J. Easton is an award nominated singer-songwriter, releasing 4 critically acclaimed albums, writing for TeenCanteen, Belle & Sebastian, BMX Bandits, Hen Hoose & National Theatre Scotland. Championed by BBC6 Music, she has performed at festivals across the UK and internationally (SXSW, Pop Montreal, The Great Escape, Celtic Connections, Indiefjord and Pop Cologne) touring the UK with Camera Obscura, The Vaselines and Grammy-nominated Kim Richey.
Scottish director Blair Young is one of Scotland?s most established directors in the genre of music-related content including feature-length archive and concert films for the bands Idlewild and Belle & Sebastian, and numerous music videos for artists as varied as Lianne La Havas and Biffy Clyro. A vastly experienced director and editor in creative promotion, film and programme making, he has over 100 credits in genres covering music videos, commercials, concert films, EPK, documentary, short film, projections, trailers, and gallery installation. Blair founded the award-winning Forest of Black production company with Beth Allan in 2004 and is a guest lecturer in edit theory at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Since Yesterday will be Blair's first cinema feature combining his passion for visual storytelling and musical history.
