Join us at the Legion for our special Real Magic Music party, we have a packed bill of talk, live music and DJs for this one. We're honoured to welcome the 'The Punk Professor' Vivien Goldman to the village to discuss her new book Rebel Musix: Scribe on a Vibe.
A chronicler of the eruptive UK punk scene; a feminist spearhead in the Golden Era of music journalism; the first UK envoy of reggae and afrobeats, and the original UK publicist of Bob Marley are only some of the many hats worn by the trailblazing music writer and historian Vivien Goldman. A pioneering voice in an industry dominated by men, Goldman established herself as one of the most influential music writers of our time as she elegantly and passionately introduced the UK to reggae, free jazz, funk and afrobeat.
With cover art by Fela Kuti?s album artist Lemi Ghariokwu, Rebel Musix: Scribe on a Vibe brings together Goldman?s extraordinary lifework from 1975 until the early 1980s and beyond. Illustrating the explosive punk scene and rebels like Britain?s first she-punks The Raincoats and The Slits as well as her encounters with artists and groups like The Clash, Sex Pistols, Public Enemy, Marvin Gaye, Lee Perry and Talking Heads and legendary writing and interviews with her friends Fela Kuti, Ornette Coleman and Bob Marley, Rebel Musix showcases the boundless magnitude of Goldman?s work and the influence she continues to hold to this day.
Providing all the right records our guest DJ for the evening is Mistah Brown from the mighty Tighten Up family with a box of the most dynamite 45s. Steve is legend and a gentlemen and we guarantee only brilliant selections from him, he'll be warming up for Vivien's talk and then getting things hyped in time for our live headliners.
Oldboy formed as a past-time - like golf or knitting - between old friends with a love of having a loud good time. Created by Max and Chris in an industrial estate rehearsal room back in 2019 and joined later by Ryan on bass. Their debut album 'Bloody' was recorded at London's super-hip Total Refeshment Centre in three days with Jonah Falco (Fucked Up, Chubby and the Gang, the Chisel) and then mixed in three hours in the basement of Rough Trade West. They're fast and relentless, it swings in places, it's super raw and the sound of three people having a high ol' time. Its pop music, its just nasty pop music.
