When Charles Dickens died in 1870, he left his last book unfinished. As a result, The Mystery of Edwin Drood has become an inspiration for a host of continuations and theories, resulting in books, articles, debates, public trials, plays and musicals. The history of Drood solutions is the history of Dickens himself. It is also a tale involving ghost writers, Greek gods and George Bernard Shaw behaving badly!
Pete Orford is Course Director of the MA in Charles Dickens Studies at the University of Buckingham.
