Description

A central figure in the development of avant-garde rock music since the 90s, David Grubbs was a key member of the groups Gastr del Sol, Bastro, and Squirrel Bait. His collaboration with Jim O?Rourke in Gastr del Sol in essence invented the concept of post-rock. He has since released fourteen solo albums and appeared on more than 200 releases. He has performed with Tony Conrad, Pauline Oliveros, Luc Ferrari, Will Oldham, Loren Connors, Royal Trux, the Red Krayola, and many many others.

In addition to his work as a composer and musician, David Grubbs is an academic and writer. He is Distinguished Professor of Music at Brooklyn College and The Graduate Center, CUNY. At Brooklyn College he also teaches in the MFA programs in Performance and Interactive Media Arts (PIMA) and Creative Writing. He is the author of the trilogy of book-length prose poems Good night the pleasure was ours, The Voice in the Headphones, and Now that the audience is assembled (Duke University Press). Other publications include Records Ruin the Landscape: John Cage, the Sixties, and Sound Recording, as well as the collaborative artists? books Simultaneous Soloists (with Anthony McCall, Pioneer Works Press) and Projectile (with Reto Geiser and John Sparagana, Drag City.
