Live Performance
Brass Band
St Austell Town Band prides itself on its commitment to the local community, through its training of young musicians and its participation in many local events. The band is dedicated, not only to providing entertaining performances, but also to striving for musical excellence by preparing contest performances and challenging concert programmes.
Many of the players in St Austell Town Band learned to play through the band's "School of Brass" and several are still members of the Youth Band. Players of all ages have access to free instrument hire and can benefit from the expertise of our tutors and conductors.
The band recently appointed David Nicholson as Resident Musical Director to work alongside Steve Sykes. David comes from a Salvation Army background and already has a wealth of playing and conducting experience.
Occasionally, we also engage the services of other professional musicians to perform with the band and give masterclasses. Swiss euphonium star Fabian Bloch visited in 2016 and performed a world premier with the band as well as sharing his expertise in a euphonium masterclass which was open to players within and outside of the band.
The Austell Town Band undertakes a wide variety of engagements including indoor and outdoor concerts, weddings, parades and competitions and has a programme for every occasion. The band is in demand for carnivals all over Cornwall and is known for its lighthearted repertoire on the march.
The Band's concert programme includes music from many genres including Pop Music, Swing and Classical and the band often performs themed concerts such as, "Songs from the Shows," "A Night at the Movies," "A Cornish Evening," and "Last Night of the Proms."
The St Austell Brass Quintet is available for smaller venues and has a varied programme including Pop, Light Classical, Folk Music and Seasonal items.
