The third instalment of Storyville live in Brighton sees a mixture of passionate and fiery expression meet with pre and de-colonial spiritual yearning. This time we are putting time aside in the second half of Count Kujo's set to invite members of our crowd to join us, whether it's a horn, percussion or guitar. We want to start a discourse with you and keep it running.
All art has a story. It communicates a narrative to us through the abstracted concept. Story's create the meaning behind our identity, defining us in the wilderness of individualism, the warmth of our tribal families and the chaotic collective of humanity. So it's no wonder, when Jazz was just a baby in New Orleans that the hotspot for Jazz was called Storyville. A red light district, Bourbon Street, The House of the Rising Sun. These are the spaces and places where the folk gathered in a melting pot of gumbo. A recipe concocted out of stories colliding as hot bodies intertwined and contorted like the jewelled webs of Ananse stretching longingly back to West Africa amidst the finely ground dust of the ancestors worked to death for centuries and dumped overboard on that terrible ocean passage. It is all connected through story.
With such a particular focus on Jazz comes questions over validity. Jazz is a form of music that was, is and always will be incredibly contentious in how the members of its diverse community define 'valid' technique and approach. Count Kujo firmly believe that Jazz, like the creator - is formless. All interpretations are valid, but the key to success and fulfilment is respect, according to Count Kujo. Rather than seek orthodoxy, they seek to pay respect to the art form and narratives by drawing from afar for inspiration. Count Kujo continues to grow by developing more broad and diverse compositions reflecting the profound belief that the shape of Jazz to come will be grounded in our ancestral past.

The Brunswick has been transformed through an extensive refurbishment programme to become the premier music and arts venue in Hove. The owners are committed to providing quality, value for money and a friendly atmosphere. We believe that a pub is an essential part of any thriving community, and should be seen as a facility for the whole community. By encouraging local groups, we run a range of classes: acting, singing, painting, language, wine tasting; and have become a meeting place for a number of groups. With a large garden and a number of meeting rooms, we can offer space for most clubs, societies or social groups. If your looking for somewhere to host your book group, yoga class, dance class, debating club, and so on, give us a call, or better still, pop in. Support your local pub.
Built in the 1930’s, The Brunswick is a striking building with curved bays, turret roofs and brass crittall style windows. Much of the original paneling (the same as used in the Orient Express) has been rescued and restored, particularly in The Venue. Atmosphere and mood change as you move from the beautifully constructed sunny garden through the airy garden room to the bar (a fusion of the best of modern bar and traditional pub). Despite the high-tech sound and stage equipment, the music and arts Venue with its wood paneling, period lighting and fireplace retains a wonderfully cozy feel. Upstairs we have beautifully decorated rooms for meetings and private parties – see Function Room Hire
We offer a broad range of home cooked food every day. Accolades have included “Restaurant quality food at pub prices”; “The best Sunday Lunch in Brighton”; “As an American, I’m very critical of hamburgers – this is one of the best I’ve had anywhere.”
