Gary Clail Soundsystem ? Our 2020 last Friday in the month residencies with the legend that is Gary Clail got sadly curtailed just two shows in thanks to Covid 19, just when we were really hitting our stride, but he's back! The Brizzle roofer turned magical, mercurial MC cum radical and righteous sound system manipulator is back in the DC once more and then some.
With fellow Bristolian legend brass and woodwind man Tony Wrafter (Tricky, Glaxo Babies, Maximum Joy etc) as his musical right hand man there?s a deep resonance at play with his fabulous new material, still hot on social comment but head warpingly good to dance to too. Gary will be MCing, live mixing, DJing and generally mashing up the area.
Pink Diamond Revue - Largely instrumental psychedelic trance/dance electro rock, with some vimmy vocal samples and other arousing sounds part buried in the mix.. Revolting Cocks via Trans Am perhaps. Artful and invigorating. Do a wonderful 'Diamonds Are Forever' where Shirley B sounds like she's flying on a microdot or two. Get it on.
Dismembered Sound Booth - ' A collection of musicians, social misfits, artists, photographers, film makers, poets, ready to change the way the world thinks...' As prolific as they are mind bending. Their first album, All Are Friends Our Dead, contained 25 songs. Their second album, Extinction Party, contained 24 songs. And now, their new album, Music For Addicts, contains 23 songs. 'Dismembered Sound Booth are fighting an artistic battle for quality over quantity. It is their plan that their 25th album will contain only one song but that it will be so sublimely beautiful that it will be physically dangerous to listen to, possibly even fatal'...
DJ Lord Zonka (Big Audio Dynamite) - back in the day, doing mix tapes parties led to the young Michael Custance spinning the 'wheels of steel' back in 1985, when he jumped up into the 'booth' at the Queens Head, Hackney, impressing the owner so much that LZ was immediately offered a residency.
A journey ensued through Acid House/Balearic beats, and the Zonka Sound turned some heads, including, in 1990, the lovely bonce of one Mick Jones, (ex Clash) who asked him to join his latest band Big Audio Dynamite ll as their DJ. He toured the world both with B.A.D and set up the Big Audio Dynamite Soundsystem, which had residencies at groundbreaking clubs such as The Gallery at Turnmills, as well as BAD Soundsystem's legendary own night 'Maximum'... Lord Zonka is back, based in London, and in the studio working on his own material and also djing around the UK, and he's a fantastic addition to tonight's bill, gonna nice you up all night long.
The Dublin Castle is a legendary pub and music venue located 2 minutes away from Camden Town tube station. It has been run by the same family for over 28 years and features 4 live bands every night as well as a great selection of beers, ciders and wines.
There are DJs after the bands on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays and a fabulous jukebox in the front bar if you’re after a more relaxed atmosphere.
But what is it that makes the Dublin Castle the long-standing centre of the indie rock universe? Is it because it’s Madness’ birthplace? Because its stage has been graced by everyone from Blur, through Coldplay, Supergrass, The Killers, The Arctic Monkeys, Billy Bragg, etc? Is it because it was no surprise to see Amy Winehouse behind the bar serving costumers? Or Suggs? (who, mind you, tended to ignore costumers and serve himself) Or is it because far from being just another Camden venue it has established itself as an indie rock institution? The answer is that it’s not only because of its musical heritage that people come to the Dublin Castle, it’s because whilst you enjoy a pint, play some tunes on the jukebox, check out the live bands, get your dancing shoes on for our DJs, chat to our friendly staff or even stage-invade a little, you’re inadvertently being part of this movement the Dublin Castle leads, this cultural legacy. Expect no castle battlements. Just pure rock and roll royalty.
