April 17th, the next in our series of Monday night esoteric talks, we welcome back Sarah Janes to present Star Medicine - Astral Bathing and Sacred Sleep in the Ancient Near East
As an enthusiastic lucid dreamer and author of "Initiation into Dream Mysteries: Drinking from the Pool of Mnemosyne," Sarah Janes is a recognized expert in the field of cultural dream research and sleep hypnosis.
In this talk, Sarah will take us on a journey into the fascinating world of ancient the Mesopotamian gods and goddesses associated with divine dreaming, with a focus on the goddesses Nanše and Gula.
Nanše was a goddess of divination, prophecy, and dreams, while Gula was a goddess of healing, associated with - and often represented as a dog. Gula's temples were healing sanctuaries and she was believed to have the power to grant prophetic dreams. We will explore the mythology and symbolism associated with these goddesses and discuss their roles in Mesopotamian religion and how they went on to influence healing dream cults in Egypt and Greece.
Additionally, Sarah will introduce us to the practice of astral bathing or irradiation for magical/oracular purposes, a practice described by the late Assyriologist Erica Reiner in her 1995 book 'Astral Magic in Babylonia'. We will learn about the history and significance of this practice and how it relates to the Mesopotamian goddesses of dream and healing.
To conclude the talk, Sarah will lead a 25-minute guided hypnagogic meditation session to help participants seed their dreams with magical Mesopotamian intent. This will be a unique opportunity to connect with the divine and experience the power of these ancient goddesses firsthand.
As an experienced public speaker, researcher, and cultural historian, Sarah's presentation promises to be an engaging and informative exploration of the fascinating world of Mesopotamian religion and divine dreaming. Join us for this special opportunity to discover the secrets of sacred sleep and star medicine.
