In For Thy Great Pain Have Mercy On My Little Pain, Victoria MacKenzie looks at the parallel lives of two great medieval women: Margery Kempe whose visions of Christ have alienated her from her husband, children and neighbours and Julian of Norwich, who spent 23 years living alone in a cell as an anchoress. The year is 1413 - a time of plague and war and a time when most women do not read or write. The meeting between these two women will risk everything.
Victoria MacKenzie is a fiction writer and poet and winner of the Scottish Book Trust New Writer Award. Rosie Andrews, who spoke at StonyWords in 2023, described this novel as "magnificent, bold and compelling".
