Description

Rock N Roll Book Club goes back to the source tonight, so far as that name is concerned, because tonight is all about real Rock and Roll, and the very first British youth culture phenomenon that defined it, the Teddy Boys.

Enter author Max Décharné, in conversation with Tony Gleed from 8pm about his highly acclaimed new book, entitled ?Teddy Boys: Post War Britain And The First Youth Revolution??  Book of the week in the Sunday Times recently, and recipient of a two page rave review by Jon Savage in the New Statesman.

You will of course know Max as a onetime member of the band Gallon Drunk, and as frontman with The Flaming Stars since 1994.

An authority on the 1950s and 1960s counterculture, he is the author of Vulgar Tongues: An Alternative History of British Slang, as well as A Rocket in My Pocket and Hardboiled Hollywood. Its a great pleasure to welcome Max back to the Dublin Castle tonight, for our Book Club assignment, Scene of many a spectacularly rocking Flaming Stars gig spanning ? gulp ? 3 decades.

There will be questions from the floor, signings, selfies, and yes you can buy books. Get a few?soon be Christmas? In addition to a suitably ?50s flavoured DJ set interspersed throughout the evening, we are pleased to announce the fab addition of Midnite Crawlers ? our very special guests tonight, hand picked to complete the evening in a sure fire, exciting Ted friendly manner.

Rockin? Scene Supremos tapping into Jive, Western Swing, Rhythm n Blues, Rock and Roll and a touch of Swamp Rock? but the superb twist with these peerless entertainers of the rockin? kind is to be found in their harmonies and juxtaposed male and female vocals. It?s a sweet sound for sure, whether cruising or letting rip. And they do let rip too. Let?s party like it?s 1954! Superb.

Crepes n drapes optional.

Description

The Dublin Castle is a legendary pub and music venue located 2 minutes away from Camden Town tube station. It has been run by the same family for over 28 years and features 4 live bands every night as well as a great selection of beers, ciders and wines.

There are DJs after the bands on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays and a fabulous jukebox in the front bar if you’re after a more relaxed atmosphere.

But what is it that makes the Dublin Castle the long-standing centre of the indie rock universe? Is it because it’s Madness’ birthplace? Because its stage has been graced by everyone from Blur, through Coldplay, Supergrass, The Killers, The Arctic Monkeys, Billy Bragg, etc? Is it because it was no surprise to see Amy Winehouse behind the bar serving costumers? Or Suggs? (who, mind you, tended to ignore costumers and serve himself) Or is it because far from being just another Camden venue it has established itself as an indie rock institution? The answer is that it’s not only because of its musical heritage that people come to the Dublin Castle, it’s because whilst you enjoy a pint, play some tunes on the jukebox, check out the live bands, get your dancing shoes on for our DJs, chat to our friendly staff or even stage-invade a little, you’re inadvertently being part of this movement the Dublin Castle leads, this cultural legacy. Expect no castle battlements. Just pure rock and roll royalty.
